秋田杉は、全国的にも有名な銘木で、日本三大美林にも数えられています。

現在、市場に出ている秋田杉は、主に２種類に分けられます。人の手で育てられた人工林から伐採された「秋田杉」と自然の中で育ってきた「天然秋田杉」です。

「秋田杉」は、間伐などを行って育てるため、成長が早く、平均生産樹齢は50年くらいと言われています。

一方で「天然秋田杉」は、自然の中で育つため成長が遅い反面、樹齢を重ねても持続的に成長し続けるため、年輪の幅が狭く、美しいとされています。「天然秋田杉」の樹齢は、200～250年と言われています。
現在では、「天然秋田杉」は伐採量が減り、価格も高価になっています。

Akita cedar, one of the most famous and beautiful trees in Japan. There are two kinds of Akita cedar on the market. One is “Akita cedar,” which was grown by farmers in the planted forest, and another one is “Natural Akita cedar,” which grew up in natural forest. “Akita cedar” grows up earlier because humans conduct tree thinning, and it takes about 50 years on average to use Akita cedar for products. On the other hand, “Natural Akita cedar” grows up slower than “Akita cedar,” 200~250 years, because it grows up in natural forest, but it keeps growing up continuously, so its annual ring is fine and beautiful. Today the amount of “Natural Akita cedar” as a product is decreasing and its price is becoming more expensive.

秋田杉が繁茂する県内の杉林は直射日光の入らない林が多いため、このジメジメした林内のいたるところに幼稚樹が見られます。
植物の育成には天然のエネルギーである太陽の光が必要なことは当然ですが、
日光の入らない原始林で成長してきた秋田杉はそれだけに強度の耐陰性 を持っているといえます。

Akita cedar flourishes in damp cedar forest with little sunshine which stretches all over the Akita prefecture. Akita cedar can grow with less sunshine than other trees, and that leads to its high vitality in shadow.

ほかの地方の杉に比べ幼い時代の成長は遅いですが、老木になっても同じ程度の成長を続けます。
秋田杉ならではの木目がそろった木材が生産されるのは成長に持続性があるためです。
そして同じ秋田杉の中でも県北の米代川流域の秋田杉は最も質の高いものとして評価されています。

The pace of Akita cedar’s growth is slightly slower than the cedars in other regions when it is small, but Akita cedar keeps that pace through its lifetime. This sustainability of growth leads to Akita cedar’s fine annual rings. Especially, Akita cedar that flourishes along Yoneshiro River, located in the Northern part of Akita, has the highest quality in Akita.

杉の質は材色、木目、かおりが優劣を決めます。秋田杉の材色（木の中心の色、心材ともいう）は
明るく澄んだ肉色が最上と言われています。
木目は細かく幅が大体そろっているものがいいとされいますが、
部分的に木目の幅が広がったり狭かったりするのが普通で、極端に細かい木目はよいとはいえません。
全体的に木目の幅が広いうえ、そろっていないものは劣等材といわれ、節が多いほど劣等度も増します。
かおりの点では鼻を突く清純爽快な感じをうけるのがいいとされています。

The quality of cedar depends on its color, annual ring, and scent, and Akita cedar which has bright and clear color is regarded as the best quality. The annual rings are good to be fine and the width between each ring is almost same, but it is natural that the width is partially different, and it is not that the finer the annual rings are the better. The lumbers whose width among annual rings is generally wide and not equal are called inferior lumbers, and the more knots those have, the inferior they are regarded to be. In terms of its scent, the lumbers which have nose-irritating, pure and refreshing scent are the good ones.
